Rwanda’s Ministry of Justice Launches Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Groups in Partnership with ULK

On January 17th, 2025, Kigali Independent University (ULK) hosted a meeting with key representatives from the Ministry of Justice to launch Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) groups. This initiative aims to equip law students with the knowledge and skills necessary for resolving disputes efficiently and amicably, in line with modern legal practices.

The meeting was led by Ruboya Antoine, Legal Awareness and Monitoring Specialist at the Ministry of Justice; Mazimpaka Eddy, Operations Oversight, Crime Prevention, and Parole Specialist at the Ministry of Justice; and Bankundiye Marie Jeanne, MAJ (Maison d’Accès à la Justice) Assistant for Gasabo and the Justice, Reconciliation, Law & Order Sector (JRLOS) District Committee member alongside Uwimana Ndiaye Innocent, Head of the Law department at ULK . Their presence underscored the Ministry’s commitment to supporting students in acquiring ADR expertise and contributing to Rwanda’s justice system.

The establishment of ADR groups at ULK provides law students with a platform to engage in training, workshops, and practical exercises, building skills in mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution.

These groups also foster networking opportunities with legal experts and institutions, preparing students for careers in dispute resolution while promoting community engagement.

By the end of the lecture, a governing body of nine students was elected to lead the ULK ADR club. The team is chaired by Igiramahoro Belard, a Year 3 Law student, who will oversee the group’s activities and initiatives moving forward.
